PALA
ALTAR-PIECE OF THE SAINTS MODESTUS, CRESCENTIA AND VITO
The
altar-piece is located behind the main altar and the nave. It depicts the saints Modestus, Crescentia and
Vito intent to worship the Virgin and the Child.
The
painting can be divided into two parts: the bottom in which we see represented
the three Saints in ecstasy and at the top
where are placed the Virgin with the Child and the small winged angels bringing
the crowns of the martyrdom. The angels surround the two figures breaking the
division between the earthly dimension and the divine one.
The
light that pervades the picture suggests the believer that the faith is the only
means of unification with God. The child at the feet of St.Vito symbolizes one of his best known
miracles, of which there are two versions. The first legend says that St. Vito
was brought to Rome where it would been pleaded by the emperor Diocletian to
free his son from the devil, but when he got the miracle Diocletian would
lashed out him, by ordering to imprison and kill the saint.
Another
devotional legend speak about the saints that would meet some desperate pastors
because some dogs had mauled a child. So the saint called the dogs and ordered them to return
the remains of the child’s body in which he restored his life.
