Storia
cinquencentesco e all' innalzamento
Tale rinnovamento
architettonico diede al complesso la conformazione attuale. Completamente restaurato, l'edificio è stato
riaperto al pubblico nel 2013.
History
Listed as one of the oldest places of worship in the
city, a document confirms the existence of a "Ospedale di San Pietro e San
Vito”', a refuge for the sick and the poor, including a chapel of the same name
since 981. Over the centuries, St. Vitus had been (was) the religious site of
some guilds such as blacksmiths, bombers, wine dealers an butchers. The only track of
this primitive church is the apse, which connects San Vito with the Church of Santa Lucia. The
rest of the structure was rebuilt in the sixteenth century: In 1561, a further
extension of the “Monte di Pietà” was granted
over the church of San Vito, which led to the renewal of the church in
the sixteenth-century-style and to the rise of the aisles and the existing
Romanesque bell tower. This architectural restoration gave the whole structure
the present conformation. Completely restored, the building was reopened to the
public in 2013.
